Food and water are the first long-term survival priorities. This page provides reference information for storage, treatment, and practical options.

Water Storage Basics

Safe water is the highest daily priority in most emergencies. Planning begins with how much you need and how you will store it.

Common planning amounts:

  • Minimum: around 1 gallon per person per day (drinking and basic hygiene)
  • More realistic: 1.5–2 gallons per person per day when possible

Storage options:

  • Factory-sealed bottled water (short to medium term)
  • Food-grade storage containers filled from tap water
  • Larger tanks or barrels for long-term home storage

Store water in cool, dark locations away from chemicals and fuel. Inspect containers regularly for leaks or damage.


Water Treatment Methods

Stored water can run out or become questionable. Treatment methods turn questionable water into safer water, within limits.

Common treatment approaches:

  • Boiling: Bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute (longer at high altitudes).
  • Filtration: Use filters rated for biological contaminants; follow manufacturer guidance.
  • Chemical treatment: Use products designed for water disinfection; follow dosage instructions.
  • Solar disinfection: Clear bottles in direct sunlight for extended periods, where appropriate.

No single method works for every contaminant. Combining filtration and disinfection provides more protection than either alone.


Emergency Water Sources

When normal supplies fail, additional water may be available in and around the home. Not all sources are safe, but some can be treated and used.

Examples of potential sources:

  • Stored beverages and canned foods (broths, juices, canned fruits)
  • Water in home plumbing and water heaters (when safe and accessible)
  • Collected rainwater from clean catchment surfaces (requires treatment)

Avoid contaminated sources such as floodwater, industrial runoff, or standing water near chemicals and fuel.


Food Storage Overview

Food supports energy, health, and morale. Reference planning focuses on calorie density, shelf life, and ease of preparation without full utilities.

Useful storage categories:

  • Dry staples (grains, beans, pasta, oats)
  • Canned proteins and vegetables
  • Ready-to-eat shelf-stable items
  • Cooking basics (oil, salt, sugar, spices)
  • Long-term storage foods (freeze-dried, dehydrated items)

Examples of Practical Storage Foods

Common options:

  • Rice, beans, lentils, and other dry staples
  • Canned meat, fish, beans, and vegetables
  • Oats, pasta, and other grains
  • Peanut butter and other nut butters
  • Cooking oil, salt, sugar, and basic spices
  • Ready-to-eat items such as canned soups, stews, and chili

Choose foods your household will actually eat. Familiar foods make rotation easier and reduce waste.


Rotation and Inventory

Stored food and water must be rotated to remain useful. Rotation is more reliable when it is part of normal life, not a separate project.

Basic rotation practices:

  • Use older items first and place newer items behind them
  • Review stored food and water on a regular schedule
  • Replace items that are damaged, leaking, or clearly unusable
  • Keep a simple written record of key storage areas
